WAGIN WOOLORAMA REFRESHMENTS

TOP

Wagin Woolorama has something for everyone and for those that like a little more than the many soft drinks, tea & coffee on offer on the grounds, we have “The Stockman’s Bar” on Friday and Saturday evenings and the “Rodeo Bar” open on Saturday evening for the Rodeo Spectacular Patrons.

The responsible staff in these areas would like to remind you that while you are in these areas the people, mostly volunteers, behind the bar are there to serve your requirements, not to be abused in any way shape or form. Please be courteous and everyone will have a good time.

In 2009 the Wagin Woolorama grounds is a Non-Smoking venue, this includes the licensed bar areas. The organisers and committee are very grateful to Healthways Go for 2 & 5 for their support.

You might think what would one little puff do? Well it could jeopardize our current and future sponsorship not to mention the health of others around you, which is of course the most important thing to consider, so please think before you light up.

All of the bar areas at Woolorama in conjunction with hotels and clubs will close in unison on Friday and Saturday nights, this idea was decided upon in order to benefit the majority of people in our community and has the full support of the local police department.

The Wagin Agricultural Society behind Wagin Woolorama welcomes you with open arms to our event and wants you to enjoy your Woolorama experience and hopes that you will return for many years to come.

Wagin Woolorama has fun for the entire family, please join us March 6 & 7.

Should you wish to know more then please direct all general enquiries to The Secretary Wendy Pederick on 98611611 or to find out more general information about this event please visit our website www.woolorama.com.au.

A WELCOME from The WOOLORAMA PRESIDENT

TOP

Welcome to everyone attending Wagin Woolorama, this is now my second year as Wagin Woolorama President and I am very happy to be involved in this wonderful event.

Wagin Woolorama continues to thrive on the Passion and Commitment by all those involved and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that is involved in making our show a success. The many volunteers and volunteer organisations, head stewards, cleaners, exhibitors, organisers and staff that put in countless hours to help us put on this event, thank you one and all for your contribution.

Thankyou also must go to the many sponsors and financial contributors to Wagin Woolorama many of you have been supporting us for a great number of years and others have only just begun their Woolorama journey, welcome on board.

Healthways Go For 2 & 5, have been a great help to us in getting all of the wonderful free entertainment on grounds from The Go For 2 & 5 Gourmet eating areas to the support for the many acts strategically placed all over the grounds and we appreciate their contribution and remind all visitors to Woolorama that the grounds are smoke free.

The Trade Fair exhibits are many and varied and the members of staff involved have made a continuous effort to become bigger and better every year.

The new Rodeo Arena at the North of the Grounds has taken a great deal of effort to complete and thank you must go to all the volunteers and workers involved in this venture.

The home industries, art and photography sections have an amazing array of local work on display so please take a moment to drop into the Eric Farrow Pavilion to view these while visiting the many areas of interest around the grounds like the sheep, cattle, wool, pigs and goats on display at Woolorama 2009.

As the current President of Wagin Woolorama I stand in awe of the previous President’s of Wagin Woolorama, thank you for making my job so easy. One such person was the late Ray Johnson who was a tireless worker that achieved many things behind the scenes and this year we pay tribute to Ray in the naming of The Ray Johnson Pavilion previously known as The Wool Pavilion. The naming ceremony will take place during the opening ceremony at 11am on the main stage within the Ray Johnson pavilion.

MEDIA RELEASE – WAGIN WOOLORAMA 6 & 7 March 2009 Update

TOP

Its only days away from the Largest Agriculture Show in Regional Western Australia and it is really starting to take shape.

There are busy bees going on everywhere, the Rodeo Arena alone is receiving a great deal of attention. Following last years post Woolorama meeting when it was suggested that viewing and toilet access were issues needing to be addressed, the whole area has been restructured with the help of The Wagin Shire and many volunteers, especially one Arthur Pederick who has worked tirelessly on this project. This year the general public will have access to the Rodeo Grounds from both the Woolorama grounds and Ballagin Road, where we will utilize the old Drive In Entrance.

While we’re speaking of The Old Drive In, you won’t recognise that, its recently had a facelift too, and now has shower facilities for Rodeo patrons and Campers alike. It will soon become the new Youth Centre in town, thanks to help from local businesses, The Wagin Shire Council and again The Volunteer Workforce.

The Wagin Historical Village will be open on March 6 & 7 with free entry over both days to Woolorama patrons, once you have entered The Wagin Historical Village you can browse around at your leisure or visit the Tearooms where you can purchase homemade pies, pasties and sausage rolls not to mention the Devonshire Teas they’re always a hit.

Lee Bessell-Brown the Head Steward in the shearing section reports that it is full steam ahead for some action packed shearing competitions in The Woolorama Shearing Amphitheatre. Which on Friday night will feature The Amateur Talent Competition and Lee Lane tells me she is very excited about the entrants in to date, there is also a live band and lots of good family fun.

The Fashion Parades at Woolorama are always popular and this year will be no exception with some stunning new clothing for you to take in while you take a moment to sit in the air conditioned comfort of the Wool Pavilion. While we are speaking of the Wool Pavilion check out the Better Choices Wool Section. Howie Ward, The Head Steward says it is shaping up to be another bumper year for entries and with a new sponsor on board, hence the name change The Better Choices Wool Section, its going to be BIG.

The State Sheep Show will feature classes for all four main wool types superfine, fine, medium and strong wool merino and poll merino sheep. Did you know that many years ago when this competition started there was only one main producer entered and they scooped all the prizes, this obviously sparked a great deal of envy leading to a very competitive State Sheep Show. While you’re checking out the sheep, why not count the studs and find out how many Western Australian Wool producers enter their sheep in The State Sheep Show which is used as a springboard for winning sheep into the Bendigo Sheep Show.

Natala King, the Head Steward of The British and Australasian Sheep section is getting ready for her second year in the hot seat and is busy organising the many entries in her shed. All Australian Boys need a shed, phewy, ALL AUSTRALIANS NEED A SHED, and this is Natala King’s shed. Natala is a former Young Rural Ambassador and is very interested in all aspects of Woolorama especially her shed.

Amy Spurr was recently awarded the title of Young Rural Ambassador and is keen to wear the Purple Sash around the Woolorama grounds over the two days. She has a strong local history and connection and has dreamed of wearing the Purple Sash for many years and is looking forward to the year ahead and as last years recipient, Londa Finlayson will tell you, it doesn’t stop at Woolorama. If you don’t like meeting people and travelling, visiting Agricultural Shows and wearing nice clothes the title of Young Rural Ambassador is probably not for you, but who doesn’t.

The cattle shed will be the place to go if you’re interested in Beef, find out some information about the Prime Beef Auction being held on Friday night at 5 and you will be very glad you did. This year’s feature cattle breed is The Charolais.

All competition sections in The Home Industries area are attracting a lot of interest from knitting and craftwork to cooking and preserves be sure and talk to the entrants and find out how its done. While you’re in the Eric Farrow Pavilion check out the Photography and Art Show, Glenys Ball and Ruth Biddulph both report that their sections are looking really good.

There are many things to see and do at this years Wagin Woolorama for the kids. Following the success of last years Oval Entertainment and Gourmet Section we’ve bought back your old favourites. There is free entertainment scattered all over the Smoke Free grounds thanks to Healthways Go For 2 & 5, from live musicians in the Go For 2 & 5 Gourmet’s 1 & 2, to The WA Axeman’s League demonstration on Saturday. There is going to be lots of fun to be had by the little ones in The Go for 2 & 5 Kids Corner, then there’s the Lazer Skirmish, climbing wall and Paintball action for those who want a little more of an energy rush.

2009 will see over eight participants from the WA Showman’s Association in attendance with rides and entertainment of all shapes and sizes in Side Show Alley. The Trade & Consumer Fair is jam packed with businesses and organisations with everything from giftware lines to tractors and trucks. The Education Pavilion adjacent to the main oval and Go For 2 & 5 Gourmet 1 will have many of the States top schools in attendance to help you make one of the most important decisions of your child’s life, where they will get the best education.

The Pig Breeders Association will this year celebrate their Centenary and they will have a solid display of pigs at Woolorama. The Goats, Funorama and Equestrian Sections are very popular at Woolorama and there is a good show expected in these areas.

Wagin Woolorama March 6 & 7, its going to be fun for all.

WHAT’S IN A NAME – WOOLORAMA MEDIA RELEASE 17 February 2009

TOP

1972 was the Year that Wagin Woolorama came into being. After a trip to Dowerin Field Days, in those days Dowerin was just machinery demonstrated in a paddock, Malcolm Edward from the Wagin Agricultural Society realised that Wagin needed to have its own feature. The strength of Wagin was in its Merino and Wool industry. A competition for school children was held and two boys came up with the same name. Peter Jenkin (9) and Mark English (10) both suggested the name Woolorama and they won $5.00 for their efforts when The Wagin Agricultural Show became Wagin Woolorama.

The Manager of Elders Wool, Tex Scrutton was convinced by a very passionate Malcolm Edward who had a strong employment history with Elders prior to coming to Wagin to transport a core sampling line to Woolorama to introduce the concept of presale wool testing to wool growers. There was a lot of interest created by this venture.

Malcolm and a few other forward thinkers realised there was too much opposition to the Woolorama spring show with other agricultural shows being held in the district at the same time of the year, they were in favour of moving it to autumn. This idea did not go unchallenged, the committee was split 50/50, the late Eric Farrow who was the society president at the time had the casting vote and voted in favour of the motion. Several of the members that voted against the motion walked away from the committee, but the majority of them came back later.

This motion to move the Woolorama from Spring to Autumn was passed in 1974, which was the only year that Wagin did not have a show. The motion was passed in early 1974 and the committee took a year to make sure they came back with a strong image and a show that later would become the benchmark of Regional Agricultural Show’s. The first ever Autumn Wagin Woolorama attracted huge crowds and featured many new innovations in the Wool Industry.

When asked recently what were the key factors in Woolorama’s success, Malcolm Edward said “Passion, be passionate about what you do and get passionate people involved in aspects of the show that they are passionate about, community involvement, from local service organisations to school children to the general public get them all involved and always being looking at ways to improve what you do and never ask “Why, always ask Why Not?"

Wagin Woolorama the name is everything. This is only a snapshot of the rich history behind Wagin Woolorama and everyone involved in the show can take pride in the fact that they below to something truly unique and wonderful. Wagin Woolorama Friday March 6 & Saturday March 7, 2009.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE 2009 NRCWA RODEO QUEEN

TOP

"My name is Stacey Lambert, I am from Bullsbrook and I am proud and honoured to say I am the NRCWA Rodeo Queen for 2009. I have been involved in rodeo all my life and started competing when I was about 5 years old. I have spent the last 26 years of my life following in one of the states best known cowboy's and my Dad's footprints - Cody Lambert and now also my mum Dianne, who is a past Rodeo Queen.

Apart from my role as the NRCWA Queen, I have also entered the Australian Rodeo Queen Quest for the coming year, of which WA have only ever had one entrant and winner in 1998 - the beautiful Jo-Lee Kestel. So it would appear I have some big shoes to fill, but with the support of my friends, family and wonderful people like yourselves, I will do my very best to be a great ambassador for both the sport of Rodeo and our great state - Western Australia.

I am so excited to be part of the Wagin Woolorama again this year. I will be there on Friday and Saturday, to promote the Rodeo and also fundraising for the Australian Queen Quest. I need to raise $5000 in order to be considered, however I am pleased to say that part of the proceeds of the funds I raise will go to my charities of choice, being the St John Ambulance and Angel Flight. I will be located near the information tent at the Woolorama and will have some merchandise for sale, raffles and also some amazing action shots of current competitors on display. I am also planning to run an all event Rodeo School towards the end of the year, so if anyone is interested in finding out how they can get into rodeo or just want to pop in and say hello - I would love to see them!!!!

The photo attached is actually me winning the Open Barrel Race at Wagin Woolorama Rodeo last year, riding the horse (who to me is like a second self) 18 year old - Lightning Jack Kane, who came out of retirement for this rodeo and won! He has now returned to the retirement paddock and I will be riding a new horse this year - Wonyaman. After such a fantastic Rodeo last year, this year promises to be even better, with more heart stopping action, thrills and spills and good old fashioned entertainment. You will also be able to meet some of the rodeo champions and get there autographs before and after the show!!!!

TOP

WA Rural Youth has declared that the Wagin Woolorama is again set to host the 2009 CSBP WA Young Farmer Competition, the premier contest where young farmers from all over regional WA compete for the title of the WA Young Farmer of the Year. The competition is to find WA’s top young farmer that will be held in at the Annual Wagin Woolorama on Friday 6th March 2009.

Executive Officer of the WA Federation of Rural Youth, Keith Mogford, said “the competition provides valuable experience for young farmers to showcase their skills within an industry that has exceptional opportunity; we are aiming to raise the profile of young people in rural Australia and give positive recognition to their skills and achievements. We are promoting agriculture as an exciting and vibrant option as a career pathway in a dynamic industry for young people.”

The Young Farmer competition is run by Rural Youth members who gain valuable skills in event management, leadership, media liaison and corporate governance. These skills are developed in a supportive environment and are easily transferred back to local communities.

The competitors day involves a series of modules covering agricultural based tasks including sheep and wool, cattle, farm safety, workshop and machinery, farm finance, agronomy, public speaking and domestic skills.

Keith Mogford said “The CSBP Young Farmer Competition is a great opportunity for all aspiring farmers, and other people who work in agriculture to develop existing abilities, learn new skills and become part of the WA Rural Youth network. The winner and runner-up will represent WA at the National Young Farmer of the Year Competition. The national competition, run by WA Rural Youth, will be held at the Dowerin Field Days later this year.
