2023 Woolorama Rural Ambassador

Congratulations to our 2023 Rural Ambassador Chloe Blight!

Hi there, I would like to start off by introducing myself, my name is Chloe Blight. I am 22 years old and currently live in Narrogin, WA. I was born and raised in and around Narrogin. Growing up, I lived on my family farm which is located about 15km south of Narrogin. My parents own and operate a mixed grain and sheep farm which I now do the book keeping for and assist with farm work on weekends.
I attended Narrogin Senior High School from year 8 to 12 and graduated with multiple TAFE qualifications. Personally, I didn’t have the most normal high school experience due to battling medical issues. This pulled me in and out of school from years 9 to 12. Despite the challenges, I was selected in the Top 4 Vocational education students for Western Australia and attended the awards ceremony in my final year of school.
Last year in 2021 I was honoured to be invited to talk to high school students about my experience completing vocational education training courses rather than the alternative ATAR pathway. This being a topic I am very passionate about as I believe the pressures put on young people to complete ATAR and know exactly what they want to do by year 12 is not necessary for everyone. There are so many options and alternatives to suit individuals to get into university if that is the pathway you want to pursue.
Growing up in a rural area sport becomes a huge part of your life and for my family, hockey was our family sport. Sport is a great passion of mine and I was fortunate enough to have been able to travel internationally playing.
In 2018 I was selected for the state country team which played in Berri, SA. Following this I was selected to play in the Australian country U21 side which travelled to Fiji. This was an amazing opportunity and truly showcases the opportunities we still have available to us in rural Western Australia.
I also volunteer to coach and umpire junior and senior hockey teams which I thoroughly enjoy as you get to watch young players develop and learn.
Recently I have also been travelling to Roe Districts to play in their local association. I started playing for the Kukerin/Lake Grace hockey team in 2021 as there was a struggle to get a team each year. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing with their club as they are such a small, close knot community. Everyone gets involved in weekend sports and it becomes a very social inclusive event.
In the warmer seasons I play tennis. I play for Toolibin tennis club which is one of the last clay court club's in Western Australia. The club is based about 50km east of Narrogin in the middle of bush. We travel weekly to play different rural towns,
anywhere from Newdegate to Katanning. I hold the role of bar manager for the club which I have been doing for 3 years now.
I have recently started my current position with Rabobank in May this year as a relationship analyst. I was beyond thrilled to be offered this position as the bank holds a strong focus on the rural community. This has always been a dream of mine to have a career in agriculture as I have always loved farming.
Since graduating I have worked in a variety of different areas within agriculture. This started with CBH followed by working as a farm hand and labourer for a few local farmers for 2 years before getting my first full time job as a livestock administrator for Nutrien Ag Solutions.
Whilst working full time, I am also in the process of renovating a commercial building on the main street of Narrogin which I hope to turn into an Air BnB and cafe/bar. This is a long term goal of mine however I believe having additional accommodation in Narrogin will hopefully assist in bringing more people to the area which I am most passionate about. My other property I rent out to WA Country health which houses our medical professionals who are working in Narrogin and require accommodation.
